Eating

Holidays by Destination Africa Tunisia Eating

Standard European dishes are widely available, including the useful pizza and pasta, plus Continental breakfast with French bread. However, local Tunisian cooking can be excellent.
The main ingredients are fresh fish, including tuna, seafood and eggs, with great emphasis placed on freshness. This should be fine for anyone who enjoys Mediterranean food. A brik a l'oef is a deep fried triangle of pastry with a runny egg in the middle. The trick is to eat it without covering yourself in yolk - fun for messy kids.

If you want something simpler you can always request plain eggs, grilled items and plain couscous. Couscous is semolina steamed and served with vegetables, lamb, chicken or fish. Harissa is a spicy sauce added to most dishes but you can ask for this to be omitted.

Tunisian fruit will be local and seasonal and the best dates taste of soft fudge. Desserts include the likes of baklava, as well as pastries inspired by the French.
