After a week's sailing, a keen novice should qualify for their Non-Tidal Crew certificate, while those with some experience can go on to obtain a Non-Tidal Skipper certificate. This will enable them to charter a boat in non-tidal waters. Six-berth, 32ft yachts are generally used for the learn-to-sail programmes; there are usually four students to one instructor. Snacks, refreshments and a light lunch are provided on-board. Learn to sail weeks are not recommended for children under nine years of age.There is also the option of a week aboard an instruction or flotilla lead boat; three-day shore-based course with hotel accommodation. This is intended as a brush-up for the more experienced but lapsed sailor, or as an introduction for the novice but is not recommended for under nine year olds.
