The idea is to gain an insight into cowboy life and perhaps learn some of the skills, as well as getting hearty outdoor cooking - barbecues, pies and steaks. Most of the options are either on working or guest ranches with some resort ranches. Also cattle drives in Canada and the US, a US Mountain Wagon Train, guided packtrips and soft adventures in Canada.

Welcomed at no less than 32 ranches, some accepting them at any age but most with a minimum age of 6 and a few only older, generally 8 or 12. Children's programmes operate at 16 of the ranches, generally, but not always, those taking younger children.

Sample Price

A Wyoming ranch taking children of 6+ and operating a children's programme might be £900 per person in a double, children £780 plus a service charge of £70-£120 per person and airport transfer of around £40 per group. Flights extra.
