From an adventure specialist started in the late ‘70s, specialising in ecologically sound and in some cases life-changing journeys. The main programme includes dedicated brochures on Himalaya, Africa, South & Central America, Europe, Antarctica and the High Arctic, China & South East Asia, and Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey. A copy of the Lonely Planet language or wildlife guide for the region is free with each family booking to start the children off on learning a bit about where they are going to visit.

What and Where

The family adventure programme visits the Himalayas (Nepal) but also Vietnam, Thailand, India, China, Borneo, Egypt, Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Peru and Antarctica.
Groups are of no more than 12 or 15 and are led by a local guide, usually born and raised in the region, helping try regional foods and barter in the local market - and they get on well with children. On some trips there are other staff, for example in Nepal porters, in South Africa a tour driver or camp staff. The itineraries include plenty of activities (fishing, cooking, snorkeling or a canoe trip are just some examples) and no long traveling days or tiring excursions, and keeping out of the heat of the day where possible, and choosing hotels with a pool if possible. Arrivals at each hotel are early evening. The only trips requiring physical stamina are the Nepal and Peru one which include stretches of daily walking.
To ensure children are appropriately supervised every three children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
Accommodation is generally in two twin-share rooms, if possible next to each other.
If preferred a similar itinerary can be organized as a tailormade for just one family.

Minimum Age

Varies with the trip but averaging from 6 years with from 4 years to Kenya, from 6 in Egypt or China, from 8 in Nepal.

Sample Price

A trip to see the Orang-utan in Borneo for 12 days would be £475 per adult and £295 per child, land cost only. The price for 12 days in Egypt would be £600 per person for both adults and children, land cost only. Prices include sightseeing and entrance fees and there are no local payments except in Namibia.
