  • When booking a hotel ask if all rooms are in the main house, what different views and sizes are on offer, and what roads there are outside. With children distance from roads and plenty of running around space are, naturally, highly desirable.

  • If you ask nicely you may be upgraded, especially midweek.

  • Check that there is no conference on (especially if you go midweek) or even better, avoid hotels that do meetings.

  • Decide whether you want to be intimate, which means you will be somewhere where you will be seen, or whether you prefer anonymity and all the facilities that go with a larger establishment.
