Holidays by Destination Europe France Roussillon Accommodation Bed and Breakfast

Report Date - Winter 1999/2000

The part of Roussillon covered here, the Pyrenees Orientales, is edged by the Mediterranean to the east and Spain to the south. Perpignan was indeed once the capital of the kingdom of Mallorca. While the more accessible parts were rather forcibly made French, the mountainous parts were much less so until relatively recently.

A Spanish feel remains: some locals are more fluent in Catalan than French and though they don't appear nearly so interested in separatism as their Spanish neighbours, parts are particularly proud of the Catalan heritage, notably the town of Prades which runs the music festival started by Pablo Casals in exile.

It all means that while the coast has given itself over to tourism, immediately behind is much more interesting.
