These are harmless but their bites are horribly itchy and they can render life almost impossible in places like Scotland, Scandinavia, Canada and even the Peak District in summer, unless there is a breeze to blow them away and they are particularly active when skies are cloudy and grey, at dawn and at twilight.

Measures to Avoid/Alleviate

• Stay away during the season.
