Holidays by Destination Europe Spain Mallorca Accommodation
Although there are still giant hotels looming over the beaches, particularly of the resorts west of Palma, there have been marked changes to the quality of accommodation on Mallorca.
First of all new hotel rooms may not be built unless an equivalent number are closed. Secondly, there are been grants for the demolition of older, poorer quality hotels, with an estimated 100 disappearing. Thirdly, there is encouragement of traditional family hotels in quieter areas. The original building must be pre 1950s, they must be largely built in local materials, of no more than 50 rooms and be managed by members of the owning family. It is easy to book any of these direct, and combine with a no frills flight, plus car hire.
The easiest way to locate one of these less mainstream properties is through one of the island's membership organisations:
Associacio Agroturisme Balear Carrer Foners 8. Palma +34 71 77 03 36 agroturismo-balear This covers Agroturismi (working farms and country estates at a wide range of prices); Hotel Rural, (country estates offering character plus modern facilities); and Turismo de Interior properties, (quiet, renovated manor houses in villages). The vast majority have a pool and those in the hills will be cooler in the height of summer.
Finca Turismo fincaturismo A web site for the moment not offering information on its member properties (around 20), but e-mail contact to request information and/or book.
Reis de Mallorca reisdemallorca A group of properties, largely hotels, away from the mainstream, offering traditional properties of high quality. There are around 30 members. The following specifically welcome families: Bah?a Paguera, Bendinat, Bon Sol, Cala D'Or, Illa D'Or and Punta Negra (largely resort hotels), though others like the Vistamar (see below) may do so as well.
